West Virginia Has Joined the PA Compact — Nobody Can Use It Yet

West Virginia is one of 29 states that have enacted the PA Licensure Compact. That is genuinely good news for later and changes nothing today. The Compact Commission is still building the data system that will issue privileges, and it projects the first ones for <strong>early 2027</strong>. Until that happens no PA holds a compact privilege anywhere, in any member state, because none exist to hold. Working in West Virginia on the strength of a license from another member state is unlicensed practice, and the fact that both states have signed the compact is not a defence. What membership does buy you is position: when privileges open, a license held in West Virginia will qualify you for privileges across every other member state, which makes it a more valuable license to hold than one in a non-member state.

Commonly two to four months from a complete filing, and longer wherever a background check or a prior-licence verification has to be chased. Confirm current processing times with the board.

Wait for the compact. If you are not in a hurry and you already hold a licence in another member state, a privilege in West Virginia should be available in 2027 for less effort than a full application.

Apply now anyway. A compact privilege is not a licence, and it does not survive your qualifying licence lapsing. Clinicians who want a permanent foothold generally still want the licence.

Physician assistants in West Virginia are licensed by the West Virginia Board of Medicine, which sets its own application, fees and processing times. Every state requires current NCCPA certification and a degree from an ARC-PA accredited programme; what varies is the supervision or collaboration agreement, the prescriptive authority granted, and how long the board takes. Note that West Virginia is one of six states where PAs have no Schedule II prescriptive authority — a constraint worth confirming against your intended scope before you file. West Virginia has enacted the PA Licensure Compact, which will eventually let a PA licensed in one member state practise in the others on a compact privilege rather than a separate application. It is not usable yet: the Compact Commission is still building the data system and projects the first privileges for early 2027. Until then a West Virginia licence is obtained the ordinary way, and enacting the compact changes nothing about today's application.
