PA Licensure and Compact Status in Hawaii

Hawaii Is Not a PA Compact State

Hawaii has not enacted the PA Licensure Compact, and no implementation is pending. The compact offers nothing here in either direction: when privileges begin in 2027 they will not reach Hawaii, and — the part that catches people — a Hawaii license will not qualify you for privileges anywhere else either. If Hawaii is the only state you are licensed in, you will have no route into the compact at all when it opens. That is worth knowing now rather than in 2027, because the fix is a license in a member state, and licenses take months. Practising in Hawaii requires a Hawaii license, full stop.

Physician assistants in Hawaii are licensed by the Hawaii Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Professional and Vocational Licensing, which sets its own application, fees and processing times. Every state requires current NCCPA certification and a degree from an ARC-PA accredited programme; what varies is the supervision or collaboration agreement, the prescriptive authority granted, and how long the board takes. Note that Hawaii is one of six states where PAs have no Schedule II prescriptive authority — a constraint worth confirming against your intended scope before you file. Hawaii has not enacted the PA Licensure Compact. Even once privileges open in 2027, a separate Hawaii licence will be the only route to practising here.
