Waiting is a strategy only if the waiting is doing something. Four things will matter whenever privileges open, and each has a lead time longer than the notice period.
Hold a license in a member state
This is the one with the real deadline. A privilege has to rest on a member-state license, and a license takes two to four months on a good day. Starting when the announcement lands means starting alongside everyone else who waited.
Keep NCCPA certification unbroken
Certification is the gate for the license and will be the gate for the privilege. A lapse does not just pause things — restoring it is its own process, and every license resting on it is exposed while it is down.
Get your license history straight
Every license you have ever held will be verified, including ones you let go years ago and may not think of as yours any more. Undisclosed prior licenses surface during verification and read as omissions rather than oversights. Assemble the list now, while it is a clerical task rather than a problem.
Assess yourself against the discipline criteria
The compact’s bar on convictions and controlled-substance actions is stricter than most state licensing standards. If there is anything in your history, find out now whether it disqualifies you, because the alternative plan is a license in each state you want to work in — and that is a plan with a much longer runway.
