West Virginia: Check Your Scope Before You Accept the Role

A compact member state without Schedule II authority for physician assistants. The license is straightforward; the constraint is on what you can do with it.

Abstract illustration of a question mark rendered as a diverging path before a doorway.

West Virginia is a compact member state that does not extend Schedule II prescriptive authority to physician assistants.

The practical question

Not whether you can be licensed — you can. Whether the role you are being offered assumes an authority the state does not grant you.

That question has to be asked before accepting, because afterwards it is a staffing problem someone else has to solve around you. Practices that regularly employ PAs will have built their workflows around the limitation. Practices hiring their first PA sometimes have not, and the discovery lands badly for everyone.

What to ask

Specifically what you will be permitted to prescribe. Whether the role involves controlled substances at all. Who handles Schedule II prescribing in the practice if you cannot. And whether the job description was written with the limitation in mind or copied from a state where it does not apply.

None of those are difficult questions and all of them are better asked early.

The compact angle

West Virginia is a member state, so a license here should qualify you for privileges elsewhere from 2027. As with Iowa, that says nothing about scope in West Virginia itself — and it says nothing about scope in the states you might obtain privileges in, each of which applies its own rules.

Verify

Prescribing rules for PAs have moved in several states, in both directions. Confirm the current statute rather than relying on a summary.
