Virginia sets physician assistant fees in 18VAC85-50-35, and its renewal cycle is unusual enough to be worth a calendar entry.
The schedule
Initial application 30. Biennial renewal 35 for an active license, 0 for inactive. Late renewal within one cycle adds 0.
Renewal falls in odd-numbered years, in your birth month. So the date moves with you rather than with the license, and it only comes round every other year — which is precisely the pattern that gets forgotten.
Why the cliff is steep here
Virginia’s rule also sets a ,000 reinstatement fee for licenses reinstated under certain statutory provisions, and 80 for a license expired two years or more. Against a 35 renewal, that is a strong argument for not missing the date.
The two-year figure is the one to note. On a biennial cycle keyed to your birth month, missing one renewal puts you uncomfortably close to that threshold before the next one would have come round.
Inactive status
At 0, inactive renewal is half the active fee and keeps the license alive. If you are stepping away from Virginia practice but might return, that is materially cheaper than lapsing and reinstating — and it avoids the cliff entirely.
Compact position
Virginia is a member state, which raises the stakes on keeping it current: from 2027 it is not just a Virginia license but a potential qualifying license.
