Texas bundles a jurisprudence examination into its physician assistant application, and it catches people out on timing rather than difficulty.
The numbers
The Texas Medical Board charges 70 for the application, which includes the jurisprudence examination. A temporary license, for starting before the full license issues, costs 07. Biennial renewal runs from 00 depending on the registration period.
The exam
It covers the Texas Medical Practice Act and board rules — supervision and delegation, prescriptive authority, notification duties. It is open book. The content is the statute, so preparation means reading the statute rather than a summary of it.
The validity window
This is the part worth planning. The examination has to have been taken within a defined period before you submit. Sit it too early and it expires before the application lands; sit it too late and the file waits on it.
It is one of the few application items where being early is a mistake, which cuts against every other instinct in a licensing project.
The compact position
Texas has not enacted the compact. It is one of the largest PA markets in the country and it will remain a full-application state for the foreseeable future, in both directions.
