What reinstatement usually involves
Back renewal fees, a reinstatement fee, evidence of continuing education covering the lapsed period, and in many states a fresh background check. Some boards require an explanation of the gap and what you were doing during it.
Fees vary widely. Virginia sets a ,000 reinstatement fee for licenses reinstated under certain statutory provisions, which is a useful reminder that these are not nominal amounts.
The cliff
Most states treat a short lapse as administrative and a long one as substantive. Cross the threshold — often two years, sometimes less — and reinstatement is no longer available. You reapply as a new applicant: full verifications, full fee, full queue, and in some states re-examination.
The compounding problem
A lapsed license rarely lapses alone. If NCCPA certification also lapsed — and it frequently did, because the same circumstances caused both — certification has to be restored first, since the license application depends on it. Two sequential processes, not two parallel ones.
Prevention, which is the whole point
Know your renewal cycle, because it is not standard: some states renew annually, some biennially, and some on your birth month in odd-numbered years. Keep the board’s address for you current, since renewal notices go to the address on file and a missed notice is not a defense. And if you are stepping away from practice, ask about inactive status rather than simply not renewing — it is cheaper to hold and far cheaper to return from.
