Oklahoma separates two things most states combine: being licensed, and being authorized to practice.

The two filings

An initial application for licensure at 50, and a separate application to practice at 0. Both are required before you are working.

Why it is structured this way

The license establishes your credentials. The application to practice ties you to a specific practice arrangement — the supervising or collaborating physician, the setting. Splitting them means the credential is portable within the state while the practice authorization is not.

Which has a consequence worth planning for: changing employers may mean filing again. The license persists; the practice authorization is attached to an arrangement that has changed.

The budgeting error

Seeing 50 and planning for 50. The real entry cost is 00, and for a PA who changes practices during a license period it is 00 plus 0 per change.

The sequencing error

Treating the second filing as something to handle after starting. If the authorization to practice has not issued, you are not authorized to practice, regardless of holding a license. That is a distinction with real consequences and it is easy to miss when the license certificate has already arrived and feels like the finish line.

Compact position

Oklahoma is a member state.
