Why the fee is not the story
New York is administratively demanding in ways a fee schedule cannot express. NYSED runs its own professional licensure architecture, separate from a medical board, with its own documentation standards and its own pace.
Two to four months is the general planning assumption for a PA license anywhere. New York is at the longer end of that, and the drivers are documentation and process rather than money.
The triennial cycle
Most states renew biennially. New York registers on a three-year cycle, which sounds like a convenience and functions as a hazard.
A three-year deadline is genuinely easy to forget. It does not coincide with your NCCPA cycle, it does not coincide with your other states, and by the time it comes round you have not thought about it in nearly a thousand days.
New York sits outside the compact
It has not enacted the PA Licensure Compact. No privilege will reach New York, and a New York license will not qualify you for privileges anywhere else.
That is the expensive fact on this page, and it dwarfs the fee. A PA holding only a New York license has no foundation for a privilege, and gaining one means obtaining a second license in a member state purely as a base — Missouri at $28 or Illinois at $50 being the cheapest doors.
The regional problem
New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are all non-members. For a PA working across the tri-state area — which many do — the compact changes nothing at all in 2027.
Three full licenses, three renewal cycles on three different calendars, three sets of CME rules. That burden is not going away, and planning as though it might is the most expensive mistake available here.
NYSED states the general rule directly: the fee you owe is the one in force when your application is received, not the one published when you started planning.
