New York licenses physician assistants through the State Education Department’s Office of the Professions rather than a medical board, and its fee schedule is unusual.
The numbers
A 0 application fee and a 5 first three-year registration, submitted together as a single 15 payment. A limited permit, which allows practice while the application is pending, costs 05 and is non-refundable.
For comparison, Ohio charges 00 to apply and Tennessee 35. New York is an outlier at the low end.
Where the cost actually is
Time and documentation. Registration through the Office of the Professions is a different administrative culture from a medical board, with its own forms and its own sequence. The three-year registration cycle is also unusual — most states run annually or biennially — which makes it easy to lose track of.
NYSED states the rule that applies almost everywhere but is rarely written down so plainly: the fee you owe is the one in law when your application is received. Fee schedules change, and the amount published when you started planning is not necessarily the one you will pay.
The compact position
New York has not enacted the PA Licensure Compact. A New York license will not qualify you for privileges elsewhere, and privileges will not reach New York.
For a PA whose only license is here, that is worth acting on well before 2027 — a second license in a member state takes months, and the limited permit does not help with that.
