New Jersey’s Division of Consumer Affairs sets a 25 non-refundable application filing fee for physician assistant licensure. The renewal is where it gets fiddly.
The mechanism
Renewal runs on a biennial cycle at 50, reduced to 10 when the license issues in the second year of the period. So what you pay depends not on you but on when in the board’s cycle your license happened to be granted.
Why it matters more than 0
Because it makes the cost unpredictable at the point you are budgeting. A PA planning a multi-state licensing project cannot know in advance which figure applies, since it depends on a board timeline they do not control.
It also means two colleagues licensed months apart pay different amounts for the same thing, which generates entirely reasonable confusion.
The general point
Proration and part-period pricing appear in several states in different forms — Illinois calculates renewal per year of the period, Minnesota allows the board to prorate an initial annual fee. When comparing states on cost, compare full-cycle amounts rather than headline figures, or the comparison is not like for like.
Compact position
New Jersey is a member state, and was among the more recent to join.
