Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs publishes a physician assistant renewal fee of 81.80. Its initial application fee is not published anywhere we have been able to retrieve and verify.
Why this happens
Not obstruction — structure. Where a fee is set in administrative code or statute, it is published because the law requires publication. Where a legislature delegates fee-setting to the agency, the amount lives in a schedule the agency can revise without rulemaking, and it may only appear inside an application packet or a licensing portal.
Michigan is not unusual in this. Arizona’s board publishes no PA fee amounts on its licensure pages at all. Wisconsin’s rule states only “the fee determined by the department.”
How to budget anyway
Use the range from states that do publish. Across the schedules we have verified, application fees run from 5 to 00, with renewals from 8 to 00. Michigan’s renewal at 81.80 sits above the middle, which suggests its application is unlikely to be at the bottom of the range.
Then confirm with the board before filing rather than budgeting from an aggregator. Third-party sites publish confident per-state figures that are frequently wrong — we have found published application fees off by four times the actual amount.
