The Collaborating Physician Requirement That Blocks Issuance

In several states the board will not issue until a named physician is on file. If you are job-hunting while licensing, that is a circular dependency worth solving deliberately.

Abstract illustration of two elements each waiting on the other, drawn as a closed loop.

The dependency runs in a circle, and the circle is the problem.

The circle

The board will not issue the license until a collaborating or supervising physician is named. The employer will not finalise the arrangement until you are licensed, because they are not committing a physician’s name to an application that may not complete. Both positions are reasonable. Together they are a deadlock.

How it actually resolves

Employers who have done this before. Practices that hire PAs regularly know the requirement and will name a physician on a conditional basis. If the employer is experienced, ask early — this is routine for them.

States that allow provisional filing. Some accept the application and hold it pending the agreement, so everything else — verifications, background check, transcripts — proceeds in parallel and only the final issuance waits.

Temporary licenses. Several states offer one, which can break the deadlock long enough for the permanent license to complete. Indiana charges 0 on top of the application fee; Texas charges 07. Worth it when a start date is at stake, pointless otherwise.

What not to do

Do not wait until the rest of the application is complete before raising it. The other steps take two to four months; the physician arrangement can be started on day one and frequently takes longer than expected, because it involves someone whose priority it is not.
